Transition to School
At Selwyn House Pre-school, we believe that a well supported transition lays the foundation for a child's lifelong learning journey.
Our Transition to School Programme is developed around the understanding that all children have the right to a positive transition to school. Together with whānau, they will feel supported and that their aspirations and beliefs are valued.

School Group
The children attend two 1.5 hour School Group sessions per week in their last two terms before they start school.
During these sessions, the children engage in the Structured Literacy Programme, which supports them in developing phonemic awareness. Through games and activities, they develop their mathematical knowledge, social skills, turn-taking, listening and language skills.

Planning for Success
Transitioning to school is a huge milestone for any child and their family.
Our Pre-school Teachers take time to fully understand the goals and aspirations unique to each whānau, which helps guild their individualised Transition to School Programme.
Before the child's pre-entry visits begin, a Selwyn House Pre-school Teacher will visit the child's new learning environment and connect with their new teacher, which helps to support a successful transition to school.

School Experiences
We provide experiences to support a confident transition.
Being part of the Selwyn House community means the children in the Pre-school have the opportunity to be exposed to real school experiences, such as assemblies, morning teas and having a 'Buddy' from The Middle School.
Each term The School Group children attend at least one whole school assembly and morning tea with Selwyn House School. This helps the children to become familiar with a larger school community and to understand what it is like at school.
A child is a treasure, to be nurtured, to grow, to flourish.
