We are excited to announce that the Robo Surfers, our Year 6 Robotics team made up of Evelyn King, Sonya Li-McHenry, Sophie Schneiderman and Aria Wakelin has taken out top honours in the Junior Theatre Division of Robocup Nationals held in Dunedin this weekend. Their item was created during the Y5/6 Unit of Inquiry and they programmed robots to tell the story of a woman they admire, Bethany Hamilton. Bethany is a professional surfer who survived a shark attack during which her left arm was bitten off. The team’s item, depicted the attack and went on to celebrate her resilience and victorious return to surfing.
Our Year 7 team of Cathlin Wieberneit and Lucy Eyre-Walker also competed very strongly with their engaging Harry Potter-themed number. Asher Scully and Mel Leatherland were also part of this team but were unable to travel to Dunedin this weekend.
We are very proud of all these girls who competed so well in a very strong field of teams up to Year 8 level. Thanks go to Liz Fairhall and Simon Christie for their ongoing support of robotics at our school. Selwyn House continues to wave the flag high for girls in STEM!
